Which Boiler Is Right

Guide

Which boiler is right for the house?

The right answer depends on the home, the hot water demand and what is already in place. The badge matters less than whether the setup suits the property.

The options

Three types — one right choice for the house

Each type has a specific use case. The right one depends on the property, not on which brand is on offer.

Combi boiler Most common install

Combi boiler

Heats water on demand — no cylinder needed. The simplest swap for most modern homes, flats and smaller terraces. Works well where hot water demand is manageable and there is no existing cylinder to keep.

System boiler

System boiler

Works with a hot water cylinder. Often the better option for larger homes or where multiple bathrooms create high hot water demand. If the cylinder is already in place and working, keeping a system boiler often makes more sense than a forced combi conversion.

Heat-only boiler

Heat-only boiler

Also called a conventional or regular boiler. Still the right fit in some older or larger homes where the existing pipework and header tank arrangement makes a combi conversion complicated or unnecessary.

What to consider

Questions worth asking before choosing

  • Does the property already have a hot water cylinder?
  • How many bathrooms — and how often used at the same time?
  • Is there a loft tank or header tank currently in place?
  • What is the incoming gas pressure like?
  • How much space is available for the boiler?
  • Would a combi conversion require significant pipework changes?
